RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
