Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
